Kho Kho Khao, 26.12.2012
The early birds left the romantic Khao Lak city hotel at 8:30, back north towards Bang Muang. Breakfast on the road with frappe, pad thai noodles and shrimp and seafood salad. Quick stop at a roadside shop to buy some items made of wood and bamboo.
In Bang Muang we drove off the main road towards the ferry boats to Kho Kho Khao, after 20 mins the car ferry left (scooters and passengers can take the small boats every 10 mins), 150 thb for car and both of us, in 15 mins we were on the island. From the pier to Pranee restaurant and bungalows it is just 5 mins, and for once our expectations for places we find online were exceeded. 5 stone bungalows on the beach and another 3 behind them, super clean and modern, with AC but not cheesy, huge window front on the sea. Fantastic, we got 2 nights for 2000 thb each. We had read here and here about the island and this place, and there are really only 2 resorts and our huts on the island. Not entirely true though 😉 Once we had secured the bungalow we drove until the end of the island to check it out, it is approx. 10 km long. Where the road ends there are some other huts on the beach. Right besides an abandoned resort, we guess the tsunami destroyed it.
Now, the best piece is yet to come. The beach. White sand, enormous beach, and after the huts we walked for another 20 mins until the very end of the beach, crossed the water and reached a mini island of only white sand. Nobody there, we had our now island, in the middle of the ocean!!! And you could walk in the shallow sand for another 100m into the sea. Paradise. See the pics.
